Path
Head Water Mill is an 18th Century Water Mill situated in Blaydon-on-Tyne and
is being restored by The Vale Mill Trust under the expert guidance of co-ordinator
Trevor Underwood with the help of his son Ben, as well as sterling work done by
Community Services. Path Head Water Mill is a real attraction for those interested
in our local heritage and history. Situated at the top of Summerhill Bank, Blaydon
the Mill is being renovated at a rate of knots. Path Head Water Mill will be restored
as a water powered joiners' shop, demonstrating early engineering techniques.
There will be on-site parking, picnic area, disabled toilets, single level for
prams and wheelchairs, superb wooded walks and student visits with many elements
of the National Curriculum experienced in a meaningful real life situation.
Path
Head Water Mill is only 10 minutes from the Metro-Centre.
From
a total mess in the early nineties the Mill is now beginning to take shape and
will soon look the way it used to years ago when water power was at the forefront
in many industries. Water channel foundations have been completed and the walls
are now up to ground level. The water wheel shaft is back in place ready for gears
inside and spokes outside. The Interpretation Centre walls are sound and new timber
roofing and felting is now in place. Work is nearly completed on the second roof,
this is more complicated with insulation required. Hammerite Ltd. of Prudhoe have
topped up our paint stock so that the insulation of the gears can go ahead after
being painted. NEM are keeping us supplied with a skip and gave us great help
in recovering the old asbestos from the Mill roof.
All
in all excellent progress is being made but we need your help. Come and join us
and become a member of the Vale Mill Trust or you can support us by just coming
down fora visit.
