Winter 2005

A bit late this quarter. normally manage Christmas. Work has overwhelmed me this Christmas.

Big Plant started to clean out silt from the Mill Pond and everything is deep in mud and hardcore. Then the contractors went on holiday and we still await their return. Meanwhile a lot of our footpaths and the Mill Pond borders look more like a building site. We have assurances from the contractors that ALL will be reinstated and ready for the Spring, Oh! roll on Spring.

Ben and I took a week off over Christmas and decorated our lounge at Whitley Bay. so I came back excited and refreshed!!

So to 2006, all the pond works should be completed before Easter and we will reinstate the Sun Clock on it’s terrace. The Acomb Wheel is making steady progress with schoolchildren and other volunteers doing brickwork and carpentry. It now looks quite a formidable structure and should look well when painted and landscaped.

We have added to the reeds in the Reed Bed and we hope that this will be vigorous and dense in Spring. New hardcore footpaths are being extended into this area for wheelchair and pushchair access.

Two bits of good news to report, Sita are dredging our pond (contractors) and returning to the depth that we had four years ago, this is being done at no cost to the Trust, and the second bit of good news, Carol Parker one of our volunteers has agreed to fill the vacancy for a Trustee. She says she “will give it a try for six months”. Well done Carol you are very welcome

I think that’s about all for now, we are hoping for a nice dry warm Spring so the site can recover quickly from the muddy pond works and we can return to our peaceful tranquil dell, of which we are so proud.

Regards Trevor & Ben, February 2006
